As part of our ongoing commitment to highlighting and showcasing LGBTQIA+ artists, we’re proud to announce our latest collaboration with POCKETBEARS by Afrenasia.

Afrenasia is an artist/designer/DJ from Melbourne. He created the Pocketbears.

Pocketbears are cute little gay dudes with big personalities.

Blending Japanese Kawaii design with 90s graphic design influences—think The Designers Republic—Pocketbears combine playful form with a bold, masculine gay aesthetic. Inspired by blind-box urban vinyl toys from brands like Kid Robot, the concept centres around a single core shape that transforms through character, colour, and attitude.

Pocketbears act as a template—a base form onto which many different characters can be applied, each telling its own story.

The Pocketbears first appeared in 2014 as characters created for the Harbour City Bears – Bear Essentials promotional campaign. Since then, they’ve evolved far beyond their origins.

In 2019, Pocketbears were produced as action figures for the Company of Men art exhibition. A second fantasy-themed series followed in 2022 for the Men on Men exhibition at The Laird. Since 2019, Pocketbears have also lived online through their own Instagram, showcasing figures, artwork, and new character designs.

In 2025, Pocketbears returned with new creations—leading directly to this collaboration with KRIS BEE BACON.
